Original article published December 22, 2023: Amidst an ecosystem that rapidly clamors for retro aesthetics, the circa 2008 ASICS GEL-KAYANO 14 has experienced a semi-revitalization over the past few years. Effectively repackaging the OG design cues of decades past for a modern audience, the heavily layered silhouette now gleams in pitch-dark ambiguity.
Perfect for industry servers and outfits infused with a minimalist aesthetic, the performance runner adheres to a strict black palette. Setting up shop along the mesh-dominant real estate, the colorless tint deepens both the leather mudguard and the TPU heel counter before consuming the near entirety of the sole unit underfoot. Retaining the silhouette’s synonymous use of metallic accents, the pitch-dark ensemble is illuminated at the mid-foot logo and tongue with platinum silver accents before transitioning the shimmering treatment onto the pods of the midsole.
