Detailed Look At The Union LA x Nike Field General “Shimmer”

Updated May 10th, 2024: @fakesickness shared new in-hand images of the Union LA x Nike Field General in the “Shimmer” colorway. While these fresh looks confirm the sneaker’s layout we had seen back in January, they also shine light on some of the special peripherals that arrive alongside the shoes, including a co-branded box that evokes high school lockers and a Union LA hangtag, shaped like a football to echo the Field General’s gridiron origins. Take a look at these new angles just ahead, and for more on this upcoming collab, check out our original coverage below that.

Updated January 31st, 2024: Sneaker News brings you an exclusive look at Union LA’s Nike Field General collaboration. Union once again applies a courageous design to this 1980s football sneaker, injecting a variety of elements that reflect their distinct ethos.

Two colorways are confirmed to release as part of this Spring 2024 collection: a Black/Ivory and a “Shimmer” version. Both are featured just below in detail in this exclusive images obtained by Sneaker News. The signature UN/LA tab is sewn underneath the lace-collar — a common feature in Union’s various collaborations — while the brand’s name appears italicized on the right tongue of each shoe.

The above Black colorway mirrors some of Union LA’s projects in the past — most notable with their prized Air Jordan 4 “Off Noir”. Touches of blue detail the upper and heel, while a solid aged yellow covered the tread-heavy outsole. A bright yellow is made apparent via the exposed stitching at the quarter and just below the upper lace eyelet.

The second “Shimmer” version pairs a soft pink hue with a faded burgundy, with lighter pink accents covering the exposed lace eyelets and tongue branding.

The Union LA x Nike Field General is set to arrive this Spring 2024; Nike also has plans to bring back the original Field General ’82 sometime this season as well.

The below article was originally published on January 17th, 2024.

In August of 2023, it was reported that Union Los Angeles would add to their growing library of Nike collaborations with the Nike Field General ’82 in 2024. A first look at this upcoming project reveals an unexpected final product.

The Field General is an original model from 1982 that was created with football quarterbacks in mind. The design isn’t unlike other Nike sneakers of that era as it features a leather and nylon mesh upper. The cleated outsole is the trademark detail of the silhouette as it was designed for grass fields.

Union’s take, however, seems nothing like the above ’82 model. These first images leaked by @kicksdong on Instagram reveal what is pretty much a completely new sneaker with modern design language used on retro product. The upper features layers above layers, with a bulky heel protector that rises above the sole. The upper-most lace eyelet is revealed as there is no quarter panel covering the area. Even the base layer is comprised of at least two layers of a mesh-like netting material. The UN/LA label hangs off the lace collar, while another stylized version of the brand appears in italics on the midsole. The sole features ample studding for on-field use, although these are likely intended to be an off-the-field lifestyle option.

Currently, a release is expected this Spring 2024. Also, more colorways are likely part of the collection as Union typically drops their collabs in batches.
