As the adidas Samba line as a whole continues a red-hot run, it’s getting another new look- sizing up the stripes and tongue logo as it kicks off a new variation of the mainstay.
Arriving with an “Oversized Logo” title, the new sneaker lays its intentions pretty plain. The medial Three Stripes and branding throughout the shoe are scaled up by at least a factor of two. Opting to emphasize those design features, the colorway that this version arrives with leans on its history, employing a white & blue gum sole layout that’s been seen plenty of times before.
Though the refreshed take on the branding doesn’t detract from the standard equity the Samba continues to carry, it does feel like a modernization. It’s a step they’ve at least leaned into before, with the adidas Samba XLG sizing up most, if not all, elements of the model. Here, that scaling is done is a more discerning way.
Crucially, the series can be interpreted as a response to Nike’s willingness to iterate on its Swoosh stamps on their models, where they’ve flipped, detached, spun and modified their logo in every manner possible. In this case, the moves adidas is making here may not be as wholly transformative, but changing the layout of something as steeped in tradition as the Samba is headline-worthy all the same.
As it stands, details about the adidas Samba “Oversized Logos” are sparse. A release date is still to be determined, but if past trends continue, the retail price should hover around $100.
