Matt Varga Even with sneaker brands willing to get experimental and subversive with their core series models, Vans has carved out a very specific niche in how they approach that concept. Their snowboarding line has flipped their iconic skate shoes into frigid function footwear, multiple lines carrying the Off The Wall branding into the snow. With the Vans Vault Half Cab Reissue 33 Vibram, the “boot-ification” of Vans strikes again, this time turning the Half Cab upside down via Vibram sole units.
While a swap in that technology doesn’t sound super transformative initially, with one glance you’ll see the widespread difference it makes. The sheer size and weight of the new sole unit sends the Half Cab from a lightweight skate shoe closer to workboot territory, with traction studs at the very bottom of the shoe driving home that new utility.
In their debut, three colorways are on tap for the Vans Vault Half Cab Reissue 33 Vibram. Two of them stay in a pretty conservative lane, monochromatic looks in white & black where the couple hits of color comes via orange Vibram branding on the mid and outsole.
The last pair in wheat & green emphasize that workwear turn. It of course calls to mind Timberland boots, but more specifically, the contrasting tones of the rubberized BBC Timberlands from 2020. Their comparable peers aside, the olive-adjacent hue the Half Cab Vibram adopts works well as a complement to the “Sunmesh” suede that takes up the majority of the shoe.
