First teased in the Y-3 S/S24 Preview, Yohji Yamamoto’s fashion line has revealed images of the adidas Y-3 Gendo Run.
As time has gone on, Y-3 more and more has referenced staple adidas products, with tech-wear takes on the Campus and Superstar spotlighted in that aforementioned lookbook. Despite lacking a true 1-to-1 comparison, the Gendo Run is no exception to that rule. The suede cap at the very front and transparent mesh Three Stripes harken to models like the Samba.
Generally speaking, there’s an equal balance between totally off-kilter and traditional hardware, and even those staid aspects are refracted the Y-3 prism. The upper is entirely constructed out of nylon mesh, anchored by a suede outline and a nylon strip that bears Yamamoto’s signature. Staying towards the rear, a pull tab is replaced by an leather overhang that towers over the level of the tongue.
The hollowed and razor sharp midsole is built using Pebax polymer technology, also seen on true performance runners like the Saucony Endorphin or Nike Air Zoom Tempo Next%. While the unorthodox construction and silhouette of the shoe is a fit for the runway, they’re constructed to be worn on your next run- a genuine development for the techwear brand. It’s an instance of futuristic form meeting ground-level function, itself a conceptual tie running through Y-3’s latest collection: “sharp juxtapositions and visceral contrasts.”
Of their two debut looks, the all-black pair definitely play into the nocturnal sensibilities of the Y-3 line, making the cream pair a tad more eye-catching. Even selecting between a palette of neutral tones, they’re simply more varied in terms of color, bouncing between grey on that overhand back tab, cream on the suede forefoot and black as a centralizing tone throughout the middle of the shoe.
