The New Balance 550 is showing no signs of slowing down in 2024, continuing its run as a tentpole NB release. The unwavering demand for the retro basketball model means that on top of “paint-by-the-numbers” drops, new editions out of Boston have to experiment in the margins. That’s a prompt the New Balance 550 “Sea Salt” responds to well, slightly tweaking their construction underneath a classic palette.
Simply in terms of the color choices at work here, the “Sea Salt” 550 rely heavily on the formula that’s brought them so much success. You can hardly go wrong with black, white, and grey alongside one another, and the gum sole adds a dash more of throwback appeal.
Though “Sea Salt” of course lends these their foremost color, it’s also a useful piece of imagery for some of their finer details. From the cracked leather revealed by a cut out “N” logo or the shaggy suede utilized in the heel cup, certain aspects of these shoes evoke an atmosphere of being weathered by the elements.
The combination of those seasoned characteristics and the classic colorway make these New Balance 550 “Sea Salt” an easily worn pair, yet one that still stands out from the pack.
