The New Balance 550 has used endless tactics to communicate its retro origins, from subtle treatments a la Aimé Leon Dore to in-your-face distressed makeovers as seen on the Reimagined pack. The Boston brand’s latest women’s 550 adds to this variety, calling in naturally aged treatments that are almost unidentifiable when held at an arm’s length.
The shoe’s New Balance logo and collar paneling carry the design theme of this pair, sporting white cracked leather to reflect what an original 1989-born 550 would look like this day in age. A smooth leather quarter encapsulates this detailing, matched on the toe, midsole, and lining in a consistent off-white hue. The rest of the shoe boasts a mix of tan/beige suedes, with a hairy heel, perforated eyestay, and buttery toe combining to span the full length of the upper. Underfoot, a white midsole and fan-favorite gum sole round out the contemporary look.
