Matt Varga Montreal abstract artist Callen Schaub has brought his designs to nearly every canvas; traditional ones, clothing, the human head, you name it. Over the course of a decades-plus career, he’s also done so to sneakers, painting the Reebok Trideca and Converse Chuck Taylor for one-off editions in the past. Now, in arguably his biggest footwear moment yet, Saucony is enlisting him for a two-piece collection showcasing his trademark style.
Compared to those Reebok and Converse shoes, where paint literally dripped off the sides of Pollock-esque pieces, the application of Schaub’s abstract technique here is a bit more reigned in. On the Saucony Progrid Omni 9, it’s comprehensive all the same, draping the midsole with a marbled gradient that takes the section from off-white at the forefoot to vivid pinks and blues at the heel. The same pattern is mirrored on the upper, where underlying synthetics are clad in the same sort of swirling shades.
The Saucony Shadow 6000, on the other hand, is almost conservative in comparison. Schaub’s influence is largely only seen on the medial River logo and the rear heel tab. While the tongue tag showcases a painted swatch of colors, the application in those aforementioned sections almost resembles city lights, sprawling laterally as if blurred by motion. Outside of that, the colorway is clean and simple, a measured combination of white, blue and black across the majority of the shoe.
