Nike Commemorates An Important Moment In Korean History With The Air Force 1

South Korea’s incredible growth from war-torn to global power will be studied in textbooks in the near future. The peninsula in the Pacific coast has become an epicenter of culture, fashion, music, and innovation, most of it arriving over the last few decades. Perhaps one moment that truly changed the societal perception came in 1981, when South Korea won the bid to host the 1988 Summer Olympics; that led to a nationwide reform that may have set the path for the country to change forever.

Prior to 1982, South Korea’s daily life could be viewed as repressive. There was a nationwide curfew, stunting any sort of nightlife culture. Police would patrol to ensure skirts weren’t too short and hair wasn’t too long. Protestors were sent to “re-education” camps for speaking out against the military regime. In January of 1982, the curfew was lifted, signifying a new era of freedom and economic growth.

As part of Nike Sportswear’s Air Force 1 World Tour series, Seoul was selected as one of the very few to get its own distinguished Air Force 1 design. Skewing towards nighttime colors of black, dark raisin, and dark spruce, this Air Force 1 truly reflects the nighttime landscape. Behind the tongue is the year in which the curfew was lifted, embroidered above the Korean sagwe that represent the different seasons and regions of the country. On the interior side of the heel is the Korean taeguki symbol above additional numbers and possibly letters.

The Air Force 1 World Tour Pack began with a Las Vegas colorway which released in February of this year. The “Shanghai” pair is due out later this year. The release date for South Korea’s version has yet to be revealed, but expect an MSRP of $135.
