New Balance tabbed their frequent collaborator, Aime Leon Dore, back in September for the return of the New Balance T500, a long forgotten archive model. While their efforts currently outnumber the widely available editions of the tennis shoe, as the year plays out, that’s certain to change. The next step in that process is an easily-worn edition in “Sea Salt” & “Nori.”
This is only the second GR colorway of the T500 in this renewed run, its debut sporting an aesthetically similar blend of “Light Arctic Grey” suede. Here, the same formula largely remains, meeting “Sea Salt” nubuck with ever-classic “Nori” green accents at the heel. An off-white midsole underfoot imbues an extra dose of vintage appeal, mirrored on the tongue which takes to a very similar tonality.
Via both its performance origins and the endorsement of Coco Gauff in this new retro effort, the lane New Balance is attempting to carve out with the T500 is clear. Ideally, it would add a competitor to the adidas Stan Smith or Reebok Club C to the Boston catalog- that is to say, a tennis-turned-lifestyle proposition that taps into a side of simplistic everyday wear not entirely represented in the current roster.
The New Balance T500 in “Nori” lands via NewBalance.com on July 15th, retailing for $110.
