Andrew Rizzo At long last, the Nike Air Max Sunder is poised to kick off its revival tour. A focal point of Nike’s last two SNKRS Showcase events, the popular Air Max shoe from 1999 gets re-introduced to consumers via its original “Canyon Gold” colorway dropping July 11th.
The bring-back effort embodies a new strategy by Nike, which consists of reducing stock of oversaturated models like the Air Force 1 and Dunk and ushering in a more diversified catalog, whether that be through the introduction of new models of return of long-archived cuts as seen here. Models like the Field General fit within the same category as the Air Max Sunder in that respect, but the Beaverton brand has pulled out all the stops to ensure the Sunder’s revival is successful, more than any other returning shoe. In addition to notable marketing initiatives like dressing world famous K-Pop group Blue Jeans in the cult classic, meticulous attention to detail has been brought to the sneaker itself.
The Air Max Sunder has been tooled to the same specifications of 90s and early 2000s pairs, defined by it’s shrouded, zip-up, spandex upper and TPR pods above the sole. It should be noted that the Sunder returned for a brief cameo in 2022 under the guidance of COMME des GARÇONS, although those collaborative pairs didn’t feature the aforementioned pods. Additional touches include a glossy mini Swoosh on the lateral sides, fabric sock lining, and text reading “6453” on the tongue; the last four digits of Nike’s office phone numbers which spell out “Nike” on a keypad.
The Air Max Sunder “Canyon Gold” drops via Nike SNKRS and retailers on July 11th for $180, followed by the pink “Fuchsia Flash” colorway in August. The first drop is technically listed as a women’s release, but sizes range from a men’s 3.5 to 15, so everyone should be able to fit into a pair.
