The Roland TR-808 is easily the most famous and culturally significant drum machine ever made. Although the instrument was only produced for three years in the 1980s, its gone on to become a pillar of the music industry, earning cross-generational praise from artists like Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston all the way through to Kanye West (See 808s & Heartbreak).
Its distinctive sizzling sound still beckons musicians from around the world, so much so that August 8th (8/8) is now commonly coined “808 Day” in honor of the machine. In celebration of this year’s unofficial holiday, Roland and New Balance are honoring the TR-808’s storied legacy with an “808” of a different variety; a collaborative take on the New Balance Tiago Lemos 808 skate shoe.
Doing its best impression of the instrument, Roland’s Tiago Lemos 808 comes packed with thoughtful detailing. On top of a rubber hangtag meant to look like the machine, the shoe itself comes decorated by a series of orange and yellow callouts and accent elements inspired by 808 buttons. Taken with the same turn-of-the-decade typography that appears on the instrument, the heel reads “Rhythm Composer” and the tongue hosts a Roland logo. The insoles feature orange New Balance x Roland co-branding, while the upper eyestays and heel logos enhance the overarching theme in yellow. Otherwise, the bulk of the upper and top portion of the midsole come painted in black, letting the special detailing carry the look.
As mentioned, pairs are fittingly set to release on August 8th (“808” Day) and command a $120 MSRP. See detailed images below and turn to our “Where To Buy” section further down for purchase links upon the shoe’s arrival.
