The New Balance 550 Takes On Distressed “Marsh Green”

Quietly, the New Balance 550 has receded a bit from the spotlight position it held a few years. With silos like the New Balance 1906R, New Balance 9060 or even New Balance 1000 capturing pole positions in the Boston Brand’s catalog, the archival silhouette might be reaching underrated status. That’s especially true when taking into account its ultra-accessible price point, and that value proposition becomes even more enticing for clean colorways the “Marsh Green” edition at hand.

Iterating on a worn-down concept last explored in “Heron Blue,” this shoe’s foremost design feature is the frayed, chipped pattern on the center N branding. Trademark emerald tonality peeks out at the extremes of that section, scattered atop an off-white Sea Salt base that’s reflected throughout the shoe’s upper.

Worn down aesthetics also appear on the midsole, with the typical faux-aged midsole developed further by scuffed detailing that lightens towards the center. An injection of light grey on midfoot outsole and cracked leather on the collar completes the outfit overall, rounding out a novel take in the always-crowded “vintage footwear” space.
