Pancakes or waffles? For Nike, there’s a clear right answer. The Beaverton brand has released a handful of “Waffle” Dunks and Blazers over the course of 2024, honoring one of Nike’s crowning moments through playful design. Reprising the theme, the Blazer Mid ’77 is now back for another helping.
Nike hasn’t been shy to embrace creative designs with no explanation just for the heck of it, but there’s clear significance to note here. It’s been 50 years since Nike brought the waffle sole to market, a pioneering invention that Bill Bowerman created by taking a waffle iron to a piece of rubber in 1972. Obviously the Blazer doesn’t feature waffle soles, but honors that moment in time through thoughtful detailing.
Compared to the first Blazer Mid “Waffle” that arrived back in March, this latest pair strikes as a more embellished interpretation. The tongue label, and backtab, and Swoosh are made to look like waffles through texture, the last of which sports butter-like “Team Gold” to match the lining. The base of shoe opts for “Wheat” tumbled leather, while smooth and hairy suede panels trade places across the toe guard and eyelet/heel portions.
Currently, the Blazer Mid ’77 “Waffle” is set to release August 20th for $115 in men’s sizing. See official images below.
