Michael Jordan is rightfully credited for revolutionizing the signature sneaker game, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and adidas helped chart a promising path fifteen years prior. First released in the early 1970s, the adidas Jabbar was the first ever signature basketball shoe released by the Three Stripes and one of the first few athlete-specific hoops shoes in general (alongside Clyde Frazier’s PUMA Clyde).
Now over half a century later, adidas is shining a light on the often-forgotten signature once more. Following the release of an original white and blue leather colorway this summer, adidas and atmos are liking up on a collaborative pair that puts a spin on that same palette. Shown below via official images, the Japanese brand calls in a suede upper and reverse color blocking to assert uniqueness, complete underfoot with a pre-aged sole for a “reimagined” feel. Based on the image gallery below, atmos branding doesn’t appear at all. Instead, the shoe comes with all-over adidas logos on the insoles and a graphic of Kareem performing his trademark skyhook on the tongue.
The atmos x adidas Jabbar will release via atmos and adidas Japan on September 27th, retailing for roughly $125. Keep our “Where To Buy” section handy for purchase links.
