Jordan Brand continues to highlight the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan’s pursuit of professional baseball with “Barons” footwear. In the wake of Jordan 1 Low and Jordan 12 colorways inspired by Mike’s minor league squad, the Jordan 39 is stepping up to the plate with black and grey “Barons” makeup of its own.
Decorated MLB manager Terry Francona said in The Last Dance that if Michael Jordan had gotten enough at bats, he might have been able to make it to the bigs. However, as we all know, fate had other plans and Mike’s baseball career ended after 127 games with the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. While Mike’s first retirement from basketball was short lived, it became an important reference point for Jordan Brand in 2014 through a “Barons Pack” that included the Jordan 1 and Jordan 9. We’ve gotten occasional “Barons” releases throughout the ten years that have passed since, but as mentioned above, Jordan Brand has been revisiting the theme with more frequency in 2024 in honor of the touchpoint’s 30th anniversary.
Steering focus back to the Jordan 39 “Barons” itself, the design takes after Birmingham Barons jersey colors with a black quarter and light grey leather over the forefoot. When it comes to performance, the AJ39 features full-length Zoom Air cushioning and ZoomX foam, the latter of which isn’t utilized on any other Jordan Brand shoe.
The Jordan 39 “Barons” is slated to release during the Holiday 2024 shopping season for $200, although Jordan Brand hasn’t confirmed a solid date at the time of this writing. Know that this article will update with all available information as it comes in.
