Matt Varga It’s rare to see a player and brand hit the ground running the way that Kyrie Irving and ANTA have. While it feels like the ANTA KAI 1 has been a factor for far longer, it’s only been about 9 months at the time of writing that you’ve been able to grab his signature shoe, and there’s already been two offshoot models tacked onto the original’s success. With the KAI 1 Speed presented as Drederick Irving’s signature model, Kyrie’s father, each successive colorway carries additional oomph on top of Irving’s trademark narrative-laden releases, once again the case for the KAI 1 Speed “Pass The Torch.”
Almost without exception, every Kyrie Irving shoes release has worn deep themes centered around #11’s personal life or his connection to the game of basketball. While official word hasn’t emerged to confirm it, the “Pass The Torch” moniker could easily cut in either direction, representing the elder Irving turning over his on-court legacy to Kyrie, or Kyrie connecting with the youth to further that goal.
Aesthetically, the concept is applied well in this “hot and cold” look, meeting a fiery ANTA logo on the quarter with frigid tones elsewhere, highlighted by a subzero outsole underfoot and speckled cement grey on the overlays. To close out, the performance touches aimed at both suiting Kai and your games remain intact, from the lockdown wiring to the grippy, multi-directional traction on the sole.
