History may not repeat itself, but it rhymes. Some 14 months ago (at the time of writing), we were heralding the return of the Nike Air Max Sunder, a 1990s model largely forgotten to time. Now the silhouette stands nearly half a dozen colorways deep into its retro run, and a sibling model is set to follow up its success. The Nike Air Max Craze, first introduced in 2001, will kick off its own bring-back in Spring 2025.
To be clear, rumors of this endeavor had already surfaced, initially reported along with a purported Martine Rose assist further down the line. While the British designer is ostensibly no longer attached to the model, the timing for this silhouette’s return is fortuitous all the same. The maximalist design language from that late 90s/early aughts period very much remains in vogue, with the bulky sole unit, outer shroud and zipper closure foremost in that regard (also doubling as comparison points for the aforementioned Sunder.)
However, the standout feature is unquestionably the slingback heel closure, If you can imagine it detached, the Air Max Craze dovetails well with another current footwear trend, sporting a mule-like build well explored by players across the industry. Of course, we’ll have to wait for the silhouette’s earnest debut to see how the public reacts, but safe to say, there’s bountiful precedent for the Air Max Craze jumping from cult favorite to popular retro once it does.
Look out for the shoe’s return in this OG colorway in Spring 2025. You can catch shots from the SNKRS Showcase just below — watch our Sneaker Release Dates hub in the coming weeks for any additional updates.
