Nike’s Chromed Out Gato Continues The Futsal Era Of Footwear

Be it with the unveiling of the Total SP III or reimaginings of their core product, Nike is all-in on bringing some of their pitch icons to the sidewalk. Their work on the Nike Gato stands as the longest-running at this stage, a status that affords Beaverton creatives the chance to get a bit more experimental with the venerated style. Which brings us to the latest “Chrome” look for the Nike Gato, expected to hit shelves soon.

The elevator pitch for this shoe is simple enough, pinning extremely bodacious chrome leather atop a reliable gum sole, the latter aspect helping ground the incredibly eye-catching touches that precede it. Crucially, this retro effort is the most time in the sun that the Gato line has recieved since around a decade ago, when Nike leveraged the silhouette to spotlight its Lunar midsole cushioning tech. That coincided with a push of the archival pitch style to transition into skateboarding, tackled contemporaneously with a Thrasher link-up and a few years later with the requisite archive-digging touch of Supreme.

As brand across the landscape now experience windfalls from pushing shoes through this soccer-to-streetstyle life cycle (the Samba is obviously the face, but entrants like the Puma King Indoor presents another comparison point), perhaps this experimental touch can be a one-timer for the model. The Nike Gato “Chrome” is expected to land this Summer — retail price is unconfirmed at the time of this writing, but will likely carry a premium on the typical $110 MSRP.
