The Nike Pegasus Premium References 2003’s Super-Lightweight MayFly

Another bridge from past to present.

The Nike Pegasus Premium References 2003’s Super-Lightweight MayFly

Nike Running continues to bridge the gap between modern-day marvels with heritage icons of the past. For example, we’ve witnessed the Vomero 17 link with the Air Talaria and the Zoom Fly 6 connect with the Zoom Streak Spectrum. Now, the Pegasus Premium conjoins with the Nike Mayfly, a race-day sneaker that was meant to last for one race only.

The Mayfly holds a unique place in the history of Nike Running as it served as an evolutionary jumping point. While running shoes were consistently getting lighter and lighter, Nike took weight reduction to the edge with this one-time-use sneaker. The shoe was stripped down to minimal form, engineered specifically to last one 100km race. At the time of the MayFly’s creation, Nike found that for every 100g weight carried on the foot, the human body would require 1% more energy. With those principles in mind, they sought to create a super lightweight sneaker that was substantial enough to cross one finish line.

With the Pegasus Premium, Nike honors this important piece of sneaker history by flooding the upper with the same University Gold and Laser Orange treatment. The midsole is also captured by the citrusy tone, color-matched by the Zoom Air tensile fibers. The black pattern on the upper, taken from the original Mayfly, is inspired by the natural webbing of the Mayfly bug.

This special edition colorway of the Pegasus Premium LV8 is set to launch this Summer 2025.
