Matt Varga Netflix’s Squid Game stands as easily one of the media company’s biggest success stories, propelled by cult adoption into a near-billion dollar enterprise. While the original storyline appears complete in the wake of Season 3, there’s a real chance that the franchise will live on nonetheless. To celebrate the latest series and potentially whet appetites for what’s to come, Squid Game is looking to its foremost footwear partner, PUMA.
Already chalking off a similar collection in the lead-up for Season 3, here PUMA takes a more granular view, working in specific plot details and allusions from what just aired. We begin with a dusky do-up of the Palermo, hitting on the Hide and Seek game from the fourth round, further solidified with a hanging key attachment and lace charms referencing the totemic square, triangle, and circle icons that served as keyholes. Jagged contrast embroidery adds further character, particularly effective in outlining the Formstrips on the medial and later sides.
Then to the Easy Rider, taking its cues from the penultimate Jump Rope game and wearing that inspiration proudly by depicting the animatronic Cheol-Su on its heel. Rope laces take a more literal route, and the omnipresent interplay between participants and guards manifests with the alternating colors of the tongue.
