Matt Varga Saucony’s ProGrid Omni 9 is arguably its strongest contender in the always-crowded tech runner category, in which designs of the past have become mainstays of current social media feeds and metropolitan street scenes. For their part, the Boston brand has outwardly acknowledged the past-meets-present concept within their catalog, minting the “Tomorrow, Meet Yesterday” concept that merges archival designs with futuristic design language.
Contemporary is really the word we’d use for the latest additions to the “pack,” executing navy/brown and tan/maroon variations of the once-performance silhouette. The earthy overtones of either one speak strongly to modern trendiness, but there’s still a retro sportstyle air that courses underneath. For our money, the “Tan/Maroon” makes for the more striking arrangement, maintaining strong contrast between tan hits down the midline and far darker cues at the quarter and sole. It shouldn’t take away from its partner, however, set up well for everyday use with its own interplay between refined khaki overlays and deep navy on the mesh foundation.
