The mythical status behind the Air Jordan 4 “Undefeated” or the Wu Tang Dunk is self-explanatory: next to no pairs ever hit the public. The Air Jordan 5 “Tokyo 23” shares that same limited quantity, but the legendary perch it sits on carries a bit more nuance. The shoe was produced for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Jordan Tokyo 23 flagship in Shibuya in 2011, exclusive to that retail location. In an era before middleman services and the like, getting your hands on a pair more than likely meant physically being in attendance.

In reviving this shoe, Jordan Brand remains faithful to the broad strokes of the Jordan 5 “Tokyo.” That is to say, the general colorway, yellow suede build, and 23 stamp on the heel remain in place—those being the most easily identified hallmarks of this shoe. However, as if to get ahead of those who claim re-releases of this sort “devalue” the original pairs, a patch of yellow in the outsole underfoot breaks from what was black on the OGs, allowing those with an eye for detail to suss out who went the hard way a decade ago and who struck gold in this 35th-anniversary drop-off.
