Matt Varga The world of high fashion and feminine design is no longer something that footwear brands can ignore. The more forward-thinking companies have been represented in either world for some time, but regardless of how ahead of the curve any brand is, there’s almost always room to expand the Rolodex in that respect. For the Three Stripes, Sporty & Rich and Grace Wales Bonner represent two of their stronger relationships in that realm, but the dawn of the adidas x Miaou partnership is one of the more exciting to hit the newswire in recent memory.
The company (and campaign) is headed up by Alexia Elkaim, enlisting “it girls” Gabbriette and Devon Lee Carlson for a Southwest showcase of everything the NYC imprint has on offer for this occasion. In addition to makeovers of iconic adidas apparel—spun into a motorsport-style jacket with asymmetric composition notes, a padded dress, and, of course, a Miaou overhaul of the tracksuit. For our purposes, it shouldn’t be a surprise that we’re zeroed in on the footwear, going a long way in demonstrating the long leash provided to Miaou for this inaugural spin.
The “Miaou Boot” takes the base Taekwondo model, a frequent sight throughout adi’s collaborative and in-line catalog, and replaces its leather hardware with mesh, further extending the upper for a calf-high, all-black style. All told, the sole unit remains the most identifiable aspect of this hybrid shoe, additionally grafting new black patent leather panels and Three Stripes branding that encircle the entirety of the shoe vertically. Then jump to the Mei Elite Miaou, once again starting with the slim sole platform from the Taekwondo, but juxtaposing that ballet-core style with soccer aesthetics, resulting in a quilted upper and shrouded tongue. Silver leather throughout and contrast yellow stripes complete the fashion-forward aspect that tints this entire capsule.
