Matt Varga New Balance shook up their skateboarding imprint and managed to break containment into the mainstream footwear universe with the New Balance Numeric 993, longtime signee Andrew Reynolds’ first signature shoe under the brand. By spinning off of esteemed and widely accepted 99x design language, the brand has a genuine hit on their hands.
After relying on well-established NB tones for the first few pairs, hitting wheat, “Grey Days,” and olive pairs among a solid first few editions, the New Balance Numeric 933 “New Spruce” is where the color blocking opportunities afforded by its makeup can really start to shine.
The overlapping panels of suede, mesh, and leather explode into an eccentric blend for this shoe, anchored by gamut of greens from pale to teal. More familiar shading appears in the heel counter and toward the front of the shoe, coating the eye-stay and mudguard sections in rich brown. Of course, below these aesthetic notes, the balance between ABZORB cushioning and board feel remains, delivering on the performance end.
