Each year, the sneaker public at large waits with bated breath for the OHSU Doernbecher collection, uniting a handful of patient-designers with a stable of Nike silhouettes for expressive and narrative-driven exclusive variations. In addition to the everlasting humanitarian drive behind each capsule, which models will make the cut is always a point of intrigue, and the Swoosh’s shift to meet throwback runner aesthetics is on full display with Khovny Kathleen Vignery and her Doernbecher Nike V2K Run.
Though Khovny’s two shoes alternate between pink and blue colorways from left to right, their expressive character is intact across either one. Frilly fur strips down the tongue, sequin-filled clear Swooshes, ribboned pull tabs, and gilded detailing in the spaces between are some of the various expressions of that, as is a hidden detail under low light; contrasting glow-in-the-dark outsoles in orange and green across either shoe. Those branching, golden snakeskin sections pull from Khovny’s love for reptiles, particularly the banana python. A few of her favorite fictional characters also make appearances, with a replication of her Pinkie Doo Doo stuffed animal appearing as a hangtag on the pink shoe.
Both her love for Taylor Swift and a link to her story arrive with the friendship bracelet on the heel. Reading “Ryan Forever,” it’s a nod to the rare lymphatic disorder that Khovny suffered as a child. While the now nine-year-old benefited from early identification of the issue (something that led to the then-baby girl being named after the surgeons who intervened), her brother succumbed to the same problem a year earlier. In her own words, “Even though I never met Ryan, I wanted to do something that would help people remember him.”
