The Doernbecher Freestyle program has delivered no shortage of unforgettable Jordans over the years. The Jordan 3s from 2010, the “Superman” 4s from 2011, the list goes on. Zach Rumbaugh, an eighteen year old with a rare heart condition, will soon add a pair that’s bound to be remembered in that same vein.
If you’re an active member of the sneaker internet, chances are you have already seen Zach’s Air Jordan 17. The sneaker has already gone viral largely due to its inspired yet surprisingly wearable design, not to mention the fact that this is also the first Doernbecher edition of the Air Jordan 17. Also consider that the model itself does not surface often. In fact, this marks the first release of the Jordan 17 High in nearly a decade.
Zach’s design reflects his passion for bikes and cars, a passion he happens to share with one Michael Jordan. A suede collar and quilted sock liner draw from luxury car interiors, and a color shifting purple upper takes cues from custom automotive wraps. The forefoot cover is made from black fabric, and the tongue beneath it carries black elephant print leather. Under the hood, the inner tongue features four stitched Jumpman logos in white. Further down, the outsoles glow in the dark.
Some of the more personal details bring the shoe to another level. The toe box features a cat face graphic that reflects Zach’s love for cats and could be interpreted as a subtle nod to MJ’s alter ego (see the “Black Cat” 4s). References to the number 38 appear on the lace lock and an added hangtag, representing the number of days Zach spent in the hospital after his heart stopped. Custom insoles and lace dubraes incorporate more of Zach’s passions. No matter which detail you focus on, this release has all the qualities of a future classic. Well done, Zach. You crushed these.
