Those who were early adopters of New Balance’s modern golden age received some welcome news towards the end of 2025: the New Balance 2002R “Protection Pack,” in all its distressed glory and original colorways, returned to the shelves anew. While the stateside launch lagged behind a global “retro” by a few months, now that global channels are largely aligned in their renewed availability, it seems clear that the concept is here to stay.
We now get a preview of some of the fresh color options in the works as we move from re-releases to new iterations. Three near-monochromatic editions have come to light. We start in trademark fashion with a smattering of greys spread across the jagged, intersecting overlays that brought this motif sneakerhead infamy. On said pair, pops of pale blue, dark grey, and tan in the sole unit help break up an otherwise comprehensive palette.
As we shift onto its two counterparts, the grey leather underlays remain intact, but new tonality takes over in the uppers, one approaching a “Black Cat” profile and one nearing the “Wheat” theming that continues to run rampant through brands’ Fall/Winter catalogs.
