Though the late Kobe Bryant is a Nike athlete for the foreseeable future, Bean’s legacy with the Three Stripes still influences their hardwood offerings all the same. On top of retro efforts for Mamba-worn models like the Crazy 8 or Crazy 1, adidas designers have utilized those often brutalist designs as jumping-off points for further cutting-edge concoctions, with nodes like the Crazy IIInfinity and later the Mad IIInfinity standing out.

As some early shots of the adidas Crazy Energy Plus come to light, apparently the German giant is set to bring things in a speedier direction. The retro-futuristic lean of the Crazy series as a whole takes on a sleeker turn for the Energy Plus, as pronounced slices jut above a molded upper, here given a carbon fiber metallic finish in one colorway and dazzle camouflage in the other.

With a shape that reminds one of a chunkier edition in Damian Lillard’s signature line, this could be a stamp of a non-signature addition to the hoops catalog that nonetheless carries its athlete’s aesthetics; the inner/outer split between a tanky exterior shell and a bootie-like interior speaks to that already. While we’ll reserve judgment on exact tooling until an official announcement comes down, these images do confirm LIGHTSTRIKE Pro cushioning in the midsole, marking the dawn of the race-ready material in basketball shoes.

Official images of two colorways have surfaced already, but a concrete release date has not. While we’re still awaiting info on when to expect these, we can confirm a $150 retail price for either one, signaling a more premium build when compared to the sticker prices for their signature offerings.
