Nike Air Bakin’ “Varsity Royal” Returning Holiday 2026

Nike’s forays into its vaunted basketball backlog continue. While we’ve known for some months that the Air Bakin was on the way back in some overall capacity, tipped off as the iconic “Varsity Red” was confirmed for a 2026 release, it appears the Swoosh expects more from the model than just that fiery edition.

Indeed, the Air Bakin “Varsity Royal” will also help the silhouette settle back onto shelves, having seen a retro in 2008 and otherwise unheard from since its ’97 OG. Almost an exact color flip of its more famous counterpart, the wavy uppers of the shoe get the sporty aquatic shade, while maintaining the black/white trim and platform that instantly deliver its 1990s design language. Of course, no mention of the Air Bakin is complete without the drama that surrounded its initial release; early builds of the shoe and associated apparel were pulled from shelves over controversy surrounding its “Air” branding. It’s assumed that this modernized one will hew close to the “sanitized” version that the public became familiar with.

The Nike Air Bakin “Varsity Royal” is expected to touch down in Holiday ’26, a span from October to December. Retail pricing is currently unconfirmed. Refamiliarize yourself with the composition via in-hand shots of the ’97 originals below. Watch our Sneaker Release Dates page for more updates as that window nears closer.
