Oklahoma women’s basketball has charged into the Sweet 16, in no small part due to the efforts of former #1 overall prospect Aaliyah Chavez. In the top 3 scorers for each of the Sooners’ March Madness outings so far and leading her squad in assists in their first matchup, it’s not only on-court performance that’s catapulted her into the headlines.
Particularly on our side of the world, Chavez’s burgeoning status as a face of the Kobe brand for the next generation has drawn our attention. That began with a black and multicolor exclusive Kobe 9 Low Protro toward the start of the month, now continuing as her team’s success only increases her national profile. Chavez has always foregrounded her Mexican-American heritage as a part of her story, so it’s not shocking to see that intact as she flexes a Nike Kobe 6 Protro.
Pulling the red, white, and green from the Mexican flag, the shoe delivers a mismatched, gradient-laden colorway, taking the collars, heel counters, and midsoles from snow white to those two vibrant accent shades on the lateral sides. A gum sole below finishes it out as a timeless touch. Zooming out, perhaps it’s Chavez and Vanessa Bryant’s shared cultural ties that made this partnership so fitting, but no doubt this is just the start of Aaliyah’s journey in any arena.
