Matt Varga Update: Just a day after the “NOWHERE” Nike Air Force 1 Low was teased by NIGO, Nike has officially pulled back the curtain. The “Sail/Loyal Blue” style pays homage to both the NOWHERE space and their LO2 column (Last Orgy 2), with the palette directly pulled from the sign that hung above the joint NIGO-Jun Takahashi venture. Further, this colorway and further NIGO AF1s will feature an “updated” build that veers closer to the wider, athletic tooling the silhouette wore in 2001.
In addition to previewing this particular style, the Swoosh confirms that this will be the first in a crate-digging series for NIGO on the Air Force 1 Low, jaunting through his personal relationships and history on Bruce Kilgore’s design. This Jun Takahashi x NIGO Nike Air Force 1 Low will be dropping first on May 1st via an activation at London’s Design Museum, coinciding with a rangy exhibition for the former BAPE head. A wider launch on May 2nd will take place via humanmade.jp and Undercover stores, with apparel options also coming alongside.
In so many ways, the story of NIGO x Nike is the story of how streetwear developed in Japan. The former BAPE head has turned to countless cultural touchstones from his adolescence in developing his Air Force 3 series, from the Planet of the Apes to varsity jackets to Levi’s denim, the latter with the help of the brand themselves.
Just as NIGO has looked back on the pieces that shaped him, a new generation earnestly looks to his work as a tentpole in their own tastes. A particular sentimental section of that journey is the NOWHERE retail space, founded alongside Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER as one of the first dedicated spaces for the burgeoning sub-culture. Though short-lived, the tangible node between two streetwear legends has lived on in the popular consciousness.
Some three decades after the brick-and-mortar shop closed its doors, Nike revisits NOWHERE with a patent leather Nike Air Force 1 Low, first teased by the man himself and quickly given a co-sign by Takahashi in kind. Contrast white stitching paces what’s otherwise a simplistic arrangement, paring royal purple overlays with a pristine white foundation, coated in the glossy materiality so associated with the Kenzo head the whole way through.
