If the retro runner movement is slowing down, no one has let New Balance know. Paging back a few years, the New Balance 1906R helped usher in that wave, and in hindsight, stands towards the top of the pile as one of the biggest beneficiaries of that aesthetic. In the time since, silhouettes like the 204L, 2000, and recently, the 1890 have taken turns as the apple of the brand’s eye with regards to the Y2K movement.Sneaker News now brings you a first look at what could be next up: the New Balance 1954R.

Emerging via official New Balance images, the aforementioned 1906R and 1890 loom large over this fresh face. Starting from the bottom up, the original New Balance 2002 sole unit, back in the consciousness by way of the Joe Freshgoods/Action Bronson model and an upcoming Ronnie Fieg joint, appears once again as the platform of an all-new sneaker.

Moving to the upper, though the exact geometry differs, the gridded TPU heel counter from the 1906R is a clear inspiration for what anchors this design at the rear. Opposing concave overlays a la the New Balance 530 or the archival 760 prove a defining feature as well, though the pronounced mudguard at the toe sets this one apart. Outside of a trademark all-grey colorway, this shoe closes with “Heritage Collection” branding on the interior, a seed of the potential storytelling on tap for Q3.

Despite these detailed studio shots coming to light, firm details on when we can expect the New Balance 1954R to make its market debut are in short supply.
