In a shocking turn of events, the wearable cleats made under the Nike Cryoshot program might no longer be the most radical soccer hybrids of the year. Nike Atelier, the Swoosh’s ultra-exclusive design wing responsible for making bespoke product for its athletes, has unveiled new one-of-one apparel for French soccer star Désiré Doué to wear during his first World Cup. Alongside it comes a sneaker that will actually see a public release, a radical new hybrid featuring the upper of the original Mercurial and bottom tooling of the Pegasus Premium.
The Nike Atelier Merc Premium is, in a sense, unlike anything we’ve seen before. Where most soccer hybrids feature at least one lifestyle component, these clash two completely different genres and eras of sport. The upper is pulled from Ronaldo’s iconic Mercurial R9 from 1998, that model once again in focus thanks to multiple Cryoshot releases. The midsole pulls from the Pegasus Premium, one of the most popular members of Nike’s revamped road running lineup distinguished by its ultra-cushioned cocktail of ReactX, Air Zoom, and ZoomX. Soccer plus running equals, in this case, a lifestyle shoe, the black leather upper offering little in terms of breathability. You could run in them, but you probably won’t want to after hearing the price.
As a Nike Atelier product, the Merc Premium commands a whopping $450, making it one of the most expensive pieces of footwear Nike will release this year. A July 2026 drop is expected, though no hard date has been confirmed as of this writing. See detailed pics below and stay tuned for updates.
