Matt Varga Once one of Nike’s most steadfast partners, legendary streetwear outfit Undercover has forged a rock-solid relationship with Vans as of late, visiting the California company for Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 capsules in recent years. That partnership is only growing stronger and quicker to market, as the two brands reunite for another three-shoe effort dropping right around the corner.
As with their last work, Undercover’s talents as curators are in focus, as the Japanese label reaches out to Emily Bennett for a showcase of her work. “Ardour,” a 2011 piece, and “All Aflame,” from around the COVID pandemic, are unflinchingly adapted for the Slip-On, understandable given the silhouette provides the biggest canvas on its toe. Toggling between both pieces across the left and right shoes, either one is a rather perfect encapsulation of Bennett’s signature art style, pinning flames, still-life florals, and often staircases together in inky expanses.
Shift to the Vans SK8-Hi and things become a bit less heady, as alternating white and black colorways wear heavy co-branding and simplistic grids across the quarter panels, maybe a subtle spin on the checkerboard prints that’ve been a mainstay for Vans stretching back decades. Overall, this marks a surprisingly rare appearance for the Sk8-Hi, once a pillar of the catalog, recently ceding space to the Old Skool for collabs and special editions.
