Matt Varga Reports of SGA’s demise were greatly exaggerated. Certainly, that’s true when it comes to the hardwood; though Victor Wembanyama may have felled he and the Thunder this past season, Western Conference teams can doubt the 2024-25 champs at their own peril, still positioned to compete for years to come. Shai’s sneaker empire, sadly, has a more immediate expiration date, but there’s still more to behold from his Converse SHAI 001 beyond its “lace-up” build, as a duo of two-tone colorways demonstrates.
Though said lace-up editions were understood by some as the final pairs to hit the market before his Nike tenure begins, we’re now getting a look at even more unreleased efforts coming down the pike. Steadily, the Chuck Taylor company has advanced the ball with the silhouette, staying grounded with the first half dozen looks, all joined in monochromatic colorways. Though the “Premium” series took additional textural swings and a “Camo” pair introduced patterns, still the expressive palettes utilized by the Lace-Up marked a major jump, clearly the biggest in the silhouette’s history.
With the Converse SHAI 001 “Black/Green Beam” and “Ghosted/Daydream Yellow,” we return to that steadier cadence, marking the first two-tone looks for the original build. Both share the same color-blocking scheme, where highlighter tones take over the tongue and cushioning that peeks through the outsole. Even with that bolder choice, Converse sticks to neutral tonality through the rest of the shoe on either pair, again a match for the metronome pace at which the MVP plays his game.
The Converse SHAI 001 in “Black/Green Beam” and “Ghosted/Daydream Yellow” appeared on overseas retailers for purchase without much advance warning. We’d wager that both pairs will arrive after the “Cheetah,” currently the next release on the calendar (September 3rd). Anticipate the standard $130 MSRP.
