While fans of Ken Griffey Jr. shoes hold out hope that Nike will start mixing in retros other than the Air Griffey Max 1, the blueprint appears to be more of the same for now, the Beaverton brand continuing deliver reissues of past colorways. Next on the docket is the Air Griffey Max 1 “Cincinnati Reds,” back on shelves October 9th for the first time ever.
Originally released in 2011 to commemorate Griffey’s nine seasons with the Reds, the sneaker combines white leather underlays, Varsity Red overlays, and black hits on the Swooshes, tongue, strap, and other ancillary elements. That trio of colors would warrant a “Chicago” comparison in pretty much any other context, though the intention here is to match the uniform Griffey wore for the back stretch of his storied career. Injuries derailed much of the Kid’s time with the franchise, but anyone in Cincy will tell you a player who signs an extension to stay in a small market is worthy of adoration regardless.
This is one of a few “Reds” colorways of the Air Griffey Max 1, joined by a grey “away” look that dropped in 2023. The long gap since the original, coupled with the relative scarcity of “Reds” sneakers in general, has driven some pretty hefty aftermarket sales over the years.
