Andrew Rizzo The Slim Reaper has spoken: Kevin Durant wants Nike to turn his signature shoes into football cleats.
The request came via an Instagram Story showing Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving wearing a custom pair of Nike KD 4s. “Yo Nike can you make me some cleats?” Durant writes. “I’m tired of my dogs having to customize the classics. WAKE UP.”
A Nike KD 4 cleat might’ve sounded pretty far-fetched when the model debuted in 2011, but it fits rather naturally into Nike and Jordan Brand’s recent expansion onto the gridiron. Several iconic Air Jordan retros have been adapted for football in recent years, with the Air Jordan 1 arguably becoming one of the most recognizable lifestyle silhouettes in the sport. Nike Basketball’s presence is smaller but growing, highlighted by releases like the 2024 Nike Kobe 6 Vapor Edge “Grinch” and the more recent Vaporposite Pro. Much of that crossover can be traced back to the custom-cleat movement, with players like Odell Beckham Jr. helping establish the practice as a legitimate part of football culture in the mid-2010s.
