Andrew Rizzo The ’90s hoops shoe vault is all the way open, Nike diving back into basketball’s golden era with retro runs for models that seldom see the light of day. As the Bakin stays in rotation and the Air Raid II gets ready for its first retro ever next year, we’re learning that Penny Hardaway’s Air Flight One is coming back to shelves too, its second retro stint set to begin Fall 2027 per zSneakerHeadz and Sneaker Files.
While closely associated with then Orlando Magic guard Penny Hardaway, the Air Flight One is also famous for being one of the handful of non-Jordans worn by Michael during his time with the Bulls. It was actually against Penny that MJ laced them up, slipping into the black and white colorway for Game 3 of the 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals, a series the Bulls would eventually go on to lose as MJ was still in baseball shape at the time. Pics of both stars wearing the shoes during that series are embedded below.
Designed by Eric Avar, the Nike Air Flight One oozes retrofuturistic, pre-Alpha Project era flavor with oval TPU elements featuring circular cutouts, appearing around the collar as well as on the forefoot portion of the midsole. The upper paneling is organized in such a way that upside down Swooshes appear on the sides, here landing in white against an otherwise black build. The 2027 retro will kickstart the shoe’s third stint on shelves, following its 1995 debut and a first retro run in 2012.
