Matt Varga Even unmoored from any big anniversary celebration, the Nike Air Max Plus has slid onto many’s sneaker of the year list as the latest representative of a bustling anime collaboration series out of Beaverton. Beyond that can’t miss One Piece moment, the model has chugged along unfettered, continuing a multiyear run of solid general releases; the Nike Air Max Plus adds to that cadre.
Anyone with a passing familiarity of Nike classics knows that Sean McDowell’s design has found its aesthetic home base in gradient colorways. While this pair may not deliver on the usual vertically stacked execution of that, a radially painted black to grey sits at the heart of this design, resulting in something of an airbrushed overall look. Squint and you’ll see that this is achieved with a subtle dot matrix effect, even tinting the TPU side “waves” before hits of black patent leather on the overlays add to its moody profile.
