In his third year in the League ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies opening round playoff matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ja Morant uttered a legendary phrase in response to Patrick Beverly’s previous smack talk; “We ain’t ducking no smoke. We run up the chimney.” With the Nike Ja 1 well into its life cycle on the market and a handful of titular colorways having already been established, Morant’s synonymous saying now serves as the latest inspiration for his signature silhouette.
Taking a sleek, pitch-dark approach, the Zoom-assisted silhouette echoes the smokey, charred surroundings of an inner chimney. Jet-black tones consume the near entirety of the mesh upper, save the mismatched yellow and grey tongue tabs and insole logos. A cloudy grey marbling takes hold of the TPU profile swooshes, animating the murky surroundings while Ja’s phrase sits in his handwriting across the lateral side of the near-white heel counter. What’s more, the sole unit is injected with a clad-cream treatment underfoot, much like the Off-White-inspired Nike KD 15 PEs.
The Nike Ja 1 “We Ain’t Duckin’ No Smoke” is scheduled to release on October 6th for a retail price of $110. In the meantime, the pair can be seen in detailed imagery below.
