With so much surplus material left on the cutting room floors of apparel and footwear factories, brands are taking initiatives to recycle or reuse these scraps to minimize waste. New Balance recently took a rather interesting approach to this issue of overflow by offering a very limited quantity of the New Balance 998 in five pre-determined colorways. Each pair is indeed one-of-one as they’ve been made according to size, merging the surplus materials while pulling the necessary new ingredients from their stocked materials. Unfortunately these flew so under the radar that the 100 available pairs have been sold out already since its early morning launch, but it still deserves attention for their creative “exploded” presentation. Hopefully this will lead to the 998 returning to its NB1 customizable platform.
