Michael Le Throughout his lengthy and influential career, NIGO has firmly stuck by the Three Stripes, offering up many releases under his own name as well as his relatively newfound Human Made imprint. And after the latter’s pack of Superstars, it looks like the designer is finally ready to reference his time as the head of A Bathing Ape — a period that many consider to be the brand’s heyday. Using the Rivalry Low as his canvas, the streetwear legend is effectively yet quietly paying homage to many a past Bapesta, a model notable for its playful and unique color blocking.
The lead, which taps one entry into the expansive series of Foot Soldier releases, is undoubtedly the most overt and bold in its overall presentation. Bright candy reds take over the toe cap and heel wrap, while yellow and blue tones accent abruptly just adjacent. Three Stripe logos brandish bold with the former hue, leaving space for the dark navy who finds further usage at both the lining and tongue. Lighter cool shades then line the upper from the vamp to the ankle, finishing off next to branded patches and white laces. In slight departure, the next uses a pairing of yellows, greens, and orange in near replication of past palettes — the Rivalry variant simply distinct in its color blocking. The last, which is by far the most neutral of the set, gives the air of classic Ice Cream classics while following the collection’s theme as it also seems to loosely borrow from the veritably iconic Bape flagship.
