Jovani Hernandez The Edison Chen-founded CLOT has helped build a considerable amount of attention around 2021’s Air Max Day by reissuing its Nike Air Max 1 “Kiss Of Death”. Although the 15-year-old collaboration is impressive in its own right, it’s one idea in a larger concept-driven collection from Chen’s mind, as revealed by news of a tea-inspired “Cha” option.
First rumored in July 2020, but revealed via social media earlier this month, the forthcoming pair complements the “K.O.D.” Air Max 1‘s reflexology theme. Akin to the famed “Net”-colored joint-effort, the next Swoosh collaboration with CLOT boasts a transparent, perforated toe box that reveals a bevy of characters denoting details of the traditional Chinese practice stamped on the insoles. Premium suede and leather appear all throughout the upper, with mudguards indulging in the sneaker’s richest shade of brown. Accompanying overlays throughout the mid-foot, around the collar and at the heel mostly maintain construction in the hairy material, but don contrasting cigar, tan and red hues.
CLOT’s branding is found across the original Air Max silhouette – in the midst of its 34th anniversary – including on the aforementioned sock-liner, underneath the tongue label, heel and outsole. Like it’s predecessor, the tea-inspired proposition features a semi-translucent outsole that reveals a multi-color diagram of a foot, further nodding to the original pair’s reflexology theme. Lastly, Chen adds his label’s token-reminiscent logo on the tread towards the heel, creating a thoughtful and ornate shoe (extending this approach onto the packaging too).
