Several things changed with the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant, daughter “Gigi” and seven others in an ill-fated helicopter accident on January 26th, 2020. The Nike Kobe signature sneaker line was one of those things, up until last month when the Kobe Bryant Estate – overseen by widow Vanessa – announced that it had reached new terms with the Swoosh, and thus, continuing one of the most beloved footwear series of the last few decades.
The first release under the renewed relationship will likely be the Nike Kobe 6 Protro “Mambacita,” a mostly black and white-colored pair commemorating the deaths of the Bryant father-and-daughter duo. While the pair previously surfaced and contributed to the rift between Vanessa Bryant and NIKE, Inc. due to an unauthorized release, the Protro (performance retro) has only recently emerged via official images, suggesting a release date is imminent.
As mentioned in Vanessa’s statement announcing the renewed contract for the Nike Kobe relationship, the “Gigi”-inspired “Mambacita” colorway of Bryant’s sixth signature sneaker will have 100% of its net proceeds given to the Mambacita Sports Foundation (M&MSF). The “2,” “Gigi” and “Mambacita”-adorned sneaker may be just one out of many shoes dedicated to the promising basketball talent. Apparel may also enter the mix, although it’s only been reported that net proceeds from footwear will be given to M&MSF on a yearly basis. In any case, savvy and casual fans alike have already expressed excitement for the Kobe line’s continuation online, though they’ve also shared how unlikely it is that they’ll get a “W” on a pair given how sought-out the shoes have become. Still, the Mambas live on.
No firm Nike SNKRS launch details have yet been disclosed by the brand, but that’s likely to change soon. In the meantime, enjoy official images of the pair ahead.
