With their newest Air Max 97, dubbed “Set To Rise,” Nike is channeling the Chinese philosophical concept of Yin and Yang. And though the shoe presents the symbol in black and white, it doesn’t necessary rely on these neutrals, as much of the colorway is also riddled with yellows, reds, blues.
Sky blues dress the upper’s mesh, appearing between the white piping along the top half. Below, blacks build out the mudguard in a rough, textured leather, shrouding the mostly-obscured layers of red and yellow. Additional instances of the latter can be found on the tongue, whose usual branding is replaced by the above-mentioned Yin and Yang imagery. Moreover, the sock liner continues these themes, framing the symbol with “SET TO RISE” text.
