The Nike Air Max 1 is no longer celebrating its 35th anniversary, but the shoe continues to reveal new styles.
Recently, a greyscale finish and crepe sole appeared on Tinker Hatfield’s revolutionary design. Seemingly prepped for the colder months of the year, the unreleased sneaker features a fabric base layer accompanied by premium suede and leather overlays. The upper enjoys “Soft Grey,” “Neutral Grey,” and “Thunder Grey” tones, with the swooshes on the sides taking on lightest shade. Other branding hits maintain a standard appearance, as does the Air Max midsole underfoot. Yet, the iconic waffle tread underneath is replaced with a crepe outsole.
Back in 2004, the Air Max 1 released in a “Crepe Hemp” edition that featured a similar (but chunkier) wrinkled rubber outsole. (The style returned in 2022 as part of the silhouette’s 35th anniversary.) The “Soft Grey” pair further expands the sneaker’s premium roster, and offers a more muted color scheme than prior takes. Some netizens have already expressed their disinterest in the crepe sole, but others have rejoiced at another “grownup” AM1.
Enjoy a closer look at the shoes ahead, as you wait for official Nike SNKRS launch details.
