A Brief History Lesson

The Nike Air Foamposite One may have debuted way back in 1997 in royal blue, but the iconic “Eggplant” colorway didn’t make its first appearance much later until 2009. It was a monster hit and easily regarded as one of the best sneaker releases of that year, with Sneaker News naming it the 5th best of 2009 in our annual Top 30 list.

The shoes were such a hit that in March of 2010, Nike decided to re-release the shoes due to pressure from footwear retail chain Foot Locker. From that point on, Nike returned to the well on several occasions, bringing the distinct iridescent purple shade across a number of other footwear models such as the Air 1/2 Cent, Air Penny V, and much more. Anything possessing that color-shifting shade was graced with the “Eggplant” moniker.

Foamposites grew immensely in popularity from that point on, reaching an industry-shifting climax with 2012’s “Galaxy” Foamposites. Nike overplayed their hand by over-saturating the market with unimpressive colorways and patterns on the model; this quickly led to the downfall of the hype, forcing Nike to pull the model from shelves to regroup.

On July 29th, 2017, Nike re-released the Eggplant Foamposites for a third time. With sneaker trends fully entrenched in the knit-uppered sock-like aesthetic, Foamposites were a bit a tough sell. Still, these sold out eventually, making their way into the hands of loyal fans.

Fast-forward to 2024, Nike is once again releasing this all-time classic. Consumer interest around Foamposites have bounced back a tad, but nowhere close to the heights that were reached in 2011 and 2012.
