Over the last handful of years, “Martine Rose” has penetrated the mainstream sneaker zeitgeist through her partnership with NIKE, Inc.
With summer underway, the British-Jamaican designer behind the eponymous label has prepped another swoosh-branded collection, which includes the ever-divisive Nike Shox R4 Mule. Co-signed by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, the modified basketball sneaker features an elongated forefoot, taller heel, and slip-on ankle area. The sneaker’s performance-informed design cues remain intact, but a gradient finish across the toe inject a lifestyle touch into the mix. According to a Nike News press release for the collection, the Shox Mule MR 4’s bold color scheme draws inspiration from vibrant goalkeeper jerseys from the 1990s.
Last summer, Martine Rose dropped an initial set of slip-on Nike Shox to much ridicule. People “in the know” and bold fashion enthusiasts, however, adopted the sneaker. It’s unlikely the shoe is designed with the masses in mind, but Rose continues to display an ability to take the familiar and defamiliarize it just enough to creat something jarringly refreshing.
Enjoy official photos of the pair ahead, and anticipate a Nike SNKRS launch by the end of July.
