Martine Ali’s Converse Wedge Might Be The Wildest Sneaker Of 2023

Wedge sneakers no longer have the cachet they did in the past, but Brooklyn-based designer Martine Ali is trying to change that with her Converse Chuck 70 De Luxe Wedge.

Part of an expansive “Create Next” campaign that also taps Isabel Marant and Feng Chen Wang, Ali’s sneaker wedge is top contender for wildest pair of 2023. As is, the heel-assisted Converse Chuck 70 – which debuted in March – is a sight to behold. Now add an edgy “Triple-Black” leather upper, removable gator, and silver hardware, and you have a shoe that demands your attention without permission.

The project, which launches via the Nike SNKRS app and converse.com on December 1st, is Martine Ali’s first collaboration with Converse. as with her jewelry line, the modified silhouette draws inspiration from 1990s era grunge and hip-hop cultures, all while being fit for the runway. The subversive aesthetic is more than just a visual experiment; EVA foam is found in the robust midsole to deliver reliable comfort (and four inches of height) to wearers. The pair’s gator provides some protection against the elements, while also allowing bolder fashion-goers to customize their outfits. Contrast stitching, rubber toe cap, and tonal Chuck Taylor patched on the medial side round out the project.

Enjoy official photos of the Converse wedge sneaker underfoot. As aforementioned, Martine Ali’s first project with the One Star Brand arrives tomorrow, December 1st, for a price of $160 USD.
